Civ 5 who is at war

Essentially, your success will be determined by your Units' Strength relative to the City. Damage is based on the difference in CS, so having too low CS you are unable to effectively damage the City and need either more or better Units. Thankfully, once you've discovered a City you always see its actual Population and Combat Strength.

They are best placed on hills to give them maximum range since they need to set up, as in that spot they are then able to fire over Forests and Jungle and will not need to move as often. While you can still take a City with Crossbowmen and Pikemen at any level below that, the higher the City's Combat Strength, the less damage you'll do. Units like Trebuchets become important as they have bonuses vs Cities and Fortified Units. This allows their Combat Strength to match the City's, and thus deal more damage.

Even Catapults can be helpful, although many people ignore this type of unit until Trebuchets or Artillery. Since your Archers can move then fire, let them use the more open terrain to get to their targets. A Siege weapon can set up and Fire in the same turn, but cannot move, set up and fire.

They suck against Cities, but are wonderful for pillaging tiles, hit and run and actually capturing Cities.

These are often high-priority targets for Cities controlled by the AI, so can soak up some damage for your forces while Pillaging tiles to help cut off Luxuries and Strategic Resources. They can fire on a City without fear of Retaliation and only require 2 Promotions to get to 3 Range. This is the single best Promotion to give them, as you can beat down a City and move in with a Knight or Naval Melee Unit and take a City. Late-Game Wars War changes fundamentally in the later game.

With the advent of Artillery, Cities can no longer protect themselves against hits from afar. Artillery has a range of 3. Things change even more dramatically when Flight is researched and you are able to attack with Fighters and Bombers. Some players rush for Artillery tech after building a strong Science output, then begin their Wars with this powerful tech.

The faster you reach Dynamite and bring these units to the battlefield, the more damage you can do. Keeping that in mind, play on the strengths provided by a Golden Age - the Gold, Culture, and Production bonuses - and choose a path to victory which uses these strengths.

Because of their diversity, this could be in fact any of the four paths! Try to accumulate lots of extra Happiness to reach Golden Ages more often, and time your battle moves accordingly to use the Movement and Combat Strength bonuses for your units.

The key is to keep the strength of your force hidden at all times. Instead, attack with a small, fast cavalry force. Try to score a few initial victories. When the inevitable counter attack comes, retreat!

The rest of your army should be spread out in a half circle; your cavalry force should lead the enemy into the middle of the trap.

When about half of the enemy force is in the trap sound that assault. Attack enemy flanks and occupy hills. This will force the enemy to engage you on two fronts. The center of your half circle should have been fortified on readily defendable position; the position where the enemy occupies should be flat and devoid of cover. Ranged fire and your enveloping flanks will easily pick off the amassed enemy with no room for movement.

Often you will destroy nearly the entire counter attacking force, if you do not defeat them oftentimes the morale of the enemy commander will break and he will run for safety. Pursue and finish them off! Attack by Defense - This strategy is classic Robert E. Lee valued the defensive bonus all soldiers get while being entrenched, Civ5 BNW allows you to do the same.

Lee would rush forth and grab high ground that often had a stream enveloping part of it. This position should be enemy ground that must be retaken by the enemy; such positions could be strategic resources, roads, and trade routes. Once you occupy the ground, dig in and wait for the enemy to try and recapture the terrain. If you chose the ground well it will only take a small force to hold off the enemy. You could use the remaining portion of your army to encircle the enemy, attack enemy cities, or sabotage supply lanes.

All of these options force the enemy to either abandon your original force near locations that are vital to their war effort or leave a marauding foreign army to demolish important cities.
