Where is bir hospital

These pioneers are the heroes and the legends of modern medicine in Nepal. Bir hospital is the central hospital where services were provided the royal family members in past. Similarly Bir hospital provided medical education to different levels of health personnel as per the needs of country. Starting with simple wound dressing and compounder trainingmiddle level health personneltraining for health assistants was started in BS, in the name of Civil Medical School. This training was continued till BS.

This hospital was used for the clinical practice by Institute of Medicine, Tribhuwan University, for their courses of Auxiliary Health Worker, Health Assistant and graduate medical education. This was an era of commencement of postgraduate education in Nepal. There was a big gap between undergraduate and postgraduate doctors.

It was realized that the post graduatemedical education should exist in Nepal only. Bir hospital is an embodied hospital of NAMS. Under the memorandum understanding with these hospitals programs are running. Ch started in BS AD. With advent of new education system in Nepal Mahabaudh nursing college was put under the Tribhuwan University in BS. In BS nursingprogram was restarted in Bir hospital with the affiliation to Tribhuwan University.

As mentioned in the preamble of the NAMS, there are three major objectives. To be a leader in the field of quality medical educationand to produce a high skilled human resource for the nation this Academy will play a pivotal role. To upgrade different strata of health institutes of Nepal and to provide quality health services to everyone.

Develop the institution into a centre of excellence for higher education and medical services by enhancing teaching, learning and research activities. To fulfill the growing demand of human resources for the country and contribute to the national health policy Expansion of teaching, learning and research activitiesto Regional, Sub Regional and Zonal levels. Bir Hospital is located in the heart of the capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu.

The hospital only charges patients for the remaining 10 percent of beds in the general ward, beds in the intensive care unit, and cabins, but even these are available at rates that are twice as cheap as the rates of private hospitals. Patients who are admitted to the free beds also get free treatment, including free surgeries. Such patients can receive treatment from designated hospitals across the country but have to present a recommendation letter from the local health facilities of their respective districts.

While Bir Hospital charges up to Rs 3, for major surgeries like neurosurgeries and cardiac surgeries, Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital and Patan Hospital, both public hospitals, charge over Rs 30, for such surgeries. In addition to the free, or very cheap, services, patients are provided with two square meals a day, along with milk, eggs and biscuits as snacks, according to hospital director Ceintury.

Seventy-eight-year-old Thapa Magar had an enlarged prostate gland that needed immediate surgery, which was unavailable at the local hospital. There is usually a six-month wait for prostate surgery, said director Ceintury, as there are hundreds of patients in line. Many like Thapa Magar cannot afford private care so they are forced to wait it out hoping for a surgery date.

Along with a number of other senior specialists , there is currently no urosurgeon at Bir Hospital. There are also no neurologists, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons, cardiothoracic surgeons, oncologists, radiotherapists, hepatologists, pulmonologists, endocrinologists, clinical geneticists, and kidney transplant surgeons. Every day, hundreds of patients from across the country reach Bir Hospital for treatment but are then either forced to seek private care or, like Thapa Magar, wait for months.

Those who cannot afford private care are forced to wait months in the Capital, which often costs more money than the treatment. It is not just doctors; the hospital lacks all manners of human resources, from janitorial and administrative staff to nurses. Take nurses—the hospital needs a minimum of nurses, but it currently only has , according to Goma Devi Niraula Shrestha, chief of the nursing department. But, the DPR of this project has not been prepared yet.

The Changunarayan mayor says though the land was easily available, the government has not shown any enthusiasm to work on it, on time. According to him, China had shown interest to invest in the project, including grants and concessional loans. For that, the project first had to build basic infrastructures like roads, electricity, sewage, drinking water among others. The government sent a letter to China last year with a commitment to prepare the infrastructures.

But post-pandemic, they did not come, and the work stopped. For this, the government has allocated Rs million this financial year but it is on the verge of being unspent. Preparations are underway to sign a contract worth Rs million for the road construction, but without a DPR, the issue is still in limbo. There is no dissatisfaction or obstruction from our sides. The under-construction Bir Hospital extension building that is operating as a community clinic, in Duwakot of Bhaktapur.

When it was approved, people believed the budget opened roadways to the construction work. All in favour of construction The under-construction Bir Hospital extension building that is operating as a community clinic, in Duwakot of Bhaktapur.
